Blackjack is the table game where your decisions matter most. You can’t beat the house edge over time, but playing each hand correctly keeps it small, and the rules are simple enough to learn in an afternoon. That combination is why it remains a fixture in every live casino lobby.

This guide covers the standard rules and payouts, a basic strategy chart you can actually use, the side bets you will see, and how Evolution’s Infinite Blackjack changes the format so that any number of players can sit at one table.

How blackjack works

The aim is to finish with a hand closer to 21 than the dealer’s, without going over. Card values are standard:

  • 2 to 10: face value
  • Jack, Queen, King: 10
  • Ace: 1 or 11, whichever helps the hand

A typical round:

  1. You place a bet.
  2. You receive two cards face up. The dealer gets one card face up (the “up-card”) and, depending on the table, a second card face down or dealt later.
  3. You choose to hit (take a card), stand (keep your total), double down (double your bet and take exactly one card) or split (separate a pair into two hands with a second equal bet).
  4. Once players finish, the dealer plays by fixed rules, usually drawing to 16 and standing on 17.
  5. Closest to 21 without going over wins. Going over 21 is a “bust” and loses immediately, even if the dealer later busts too.

That last point is the source of the house edge: you act first, so your busts lose before the dealer has to risk anything.

Rules, bets and payouts

These are general blackjack rules; the exact set varies by table, so read the rules panel before you play.

OutcomeTypical payout
Win1:1
Blackjack (Ace + 10-value card in first two cards)3:2 at most tables; some pay 6:5
Push (tie)Stake returned
Insurance (dealer shows Ace)2:1

Rules that affect your odds:

  • 3:2 vs 6:5 on blackjack. Always prefer 3:2. At 6:5 a ₹1,000 blackjack pays ₹1,200 instead of ₹1,500.
  • Dealer stands or hits on soft 17. Standing on soft 17 is slightly better for you.
  • Doubling after splitting and surrender options help the player when offered.
  • Fewer decks are generally slightly better for the player.

Basic strategy: a simple chart

Basic strategy is the set of best plays worked out by computer simulation for each player total against each dealer up-card. The simplified version below covers the most common situations in multi-deck games where the dealer stands on soft 17. It is general guidance, not specific to any one table.

Hard totals (no Ace counted as 11)

Your handDealer 2-6Dealer 7-Ace
8 or lessHitHit
9Double vs 3-6, otherwise hitHit
10DoubleDouble vs 7-9, hit vs 10/Ace
11DoubleDouble (hit vs Ace in some rule sets)
12Stand vs 4-6, hit vs 2-3Hit
13-16StandHit
17+StandStand

Soft totals and pairs (quick rules)

  • Soft 13-16 (A,2 to A,5): hit, but double against a dealer 5 or 6 (and 4 for A,4 and A,5).
  • Soft 17 (A,6): double against 3-6, otherwise hit.
  • Soft 18 (A,7): stand against 2, 7 and 8; double against 3-6; hit against 9, 10 and Ace.
  • Soft 19+: stand.
  • Always split Aces and 8s.
  • Never split 10s or 5s (treat 5,5 as hard 10).
  • Split 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s against dealer 2-7 (6s against 2-6).
  • Split 9s against 2-9 except 7; stand against 7, 10 and Ace.
  • Never take insurance.

Many casinos let you keep a strategy card open beside the live table. Use it; there is no penalty for checking.

Strategy that actually helps

Basic strategy is the biggest single improvement you can make, but it only lowers the house edge; it does not reverse it. Beyond that:

  • Pick good rules. 3:2 blackjack, dealer stands on soft 17, and doubling after split are worth looking for.
  • Skip progressions. Doubling your stake after a loss doesn’t change the odds and can burn through a budget quickly.
  • Treat side bets as entertainment. They usually carry a higher house edge than the main hand.
  • Card counting does not work in practice online: RNG games reshuffle every hand, and live tables typically reshuffle often.
  • Set a fixed stake. Example: with ₹3,000 and a ₹100 base bet, you have room for doubles and splits without running out after a short losing streak.
  • Check bonus terms. Blackjack often counts at a low rate towards wagering. See wagering requirements explained.

Variants you’ll find online

Infinite Blackjack (Evolution)

Evolution describes Infinite Blackjack as massively scalable live blackjack with unlimited seats at the table and low bet limits. Instead of each player getting their own cards, a limitless number of players are dealt a common initial two-card hand, and each player then plays that hand as they want. If you double and another player stands, you each take your own path from the same starting cards.

According to Evolution, the game also has:

  • Four optional side bets: Any Pair, 21+3, Hot 3 and Bust It.
  • The Six Card Charlie rule, under which a hand that reaches six cards without busting is treated as a winner (the standard meaning of the rule; check the game’s Help screen for exact treatment).

Evolution’s page does not publish the RTP, the number of decks, the side-bet paytables or the exact bet limits, so check the in-game Help screen before you play.

Other formats

  • Classic seated live blackjack: a fixed number of seats (usually seven); you may need to wait for a seat or use “bet behind” on another player’s hand.
  • RNG blackjack: software-dealt, often with lower minimums and the option to play at your own pace.
  • Side-bet variants: tables built around 21+3, Perfect Pairs or similar extras.

If you like card games with simple rules, compare baccarat, Teen Patti and Andar Bahar. For roulette with multipliers, see Lightning Roulette.

Playing on mobile

Blackjack suits small screens well because there are only a few buttons: hit, stand, double, split. Live tables run in mobile browsers and in casino apps where offered. Keep a steady connection, since each decision has a short timer and an auto-stand may apply if you time out. Live video uses more data than RNG tables, so drop the stream quality if your plan is limited. For learning basic strategy, RNG blackjack on your phone is a low-pressure way to practise without a decision timer.

Before you play

Blackjack rewards good decisions but still has a house edge. Decide your budget and session length beforehand, stick to a fixed base stake, and stop when you hit either limit. Don’t increase stakes to win back losses. Our responsible gambling page has practical tools, and our live casino guide for India explains how live tables work. Blackjack: common questions

What is basic strategy in blackjack?

Basic strategy is the mathematically best play for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up-card. It reduces the house edge to its lowest level for a given rule set, but it does not remove it.

How does Infinite Blackjack work?

In Evolution's Infinite Blackjack, an unlimited number of players are dealt the same initial two-card hand, and each player then decides independently whether to hit, stand, double or split. Evolution lists four optional side bets: Any Pair, 21+3, Hot 3 and Bust It.

What does blackjack pay?

At most tables a natural blackjack pays 3:2, and an ordinary winning hand pays 1:1. Some tables pay only 6:5 on blackjack, which is worse for the player, so check the table rules first.

Should I take insurance?

For basic-strategy players, no. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer has blackjack, and it carries a higher house edge than the main game.

What is the RTP of Infinite Blackjack?

Evolution's Infinite Blackjack page does not publish the RTP, the number of decks or the side-bet paytables, so we can't confirm them. Check the Help screen in the game at your casino.
