Baccarat is one of the simplest games in any casino lobby. You do not play a hand yourself or make decisions after the deal: you pick a side, the dealer follows fixed drawing rules, and the round settles in under a minute. That simplicity, plus a low house edge on the main bets, explains why it sits alongside blackjack and roulette as a staple of live casino sections.

This guide covers the standard rules first, then the Evolution variants you are most likely to meet: Speed Baccarat, No Commission Baccarat and Lightning Baccarat.

How baccarat works

Two hands are dealt, called Player and Banker. These are just names for the two positions; you are not the player and the casino is not the banker. You bet on which hand will finish closer to 9, or on a Tie.

Card values are simple:

  • Aces count as 1.
  • Cards 2 to 9 count at face value.
  • 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 0.

Only the last digit of a total matters. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5. A King and a 9 make 9, the best possible total.

Each hand starts with two cards. A total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards is called a natural, and the round ends immediately. Otherwise, a third card may be drawn for either hand according to a fixed table. You never decide whether to draw, so there is no “skill” in playing the hand itself.

The third-card rules (generic)

These are the standard Punto Banco rules used by most online tables:

HandRule
Player, total 0–5Draws a third card
Player, total 6–7Stands
Banker, Player stoodBanker draws on 0–5, stands on 6–7
Banker, total 0–2Always draws
Banker, total 3Draws unless Player’s third card was 8
Banker, total 4Draws if Player’s third card was 2–7
Banker, total 5Draws if Player’s third card was 4–7
Banker, total 6Draws if Player’s third card was 6 or 7
Banker, total 7Stands

You do not need to memorise this. The dealer and the software apply it automatically, and the outcome is shown on screen.

Bets and payouts

The three main bets on a standard commission table pay as follows:

  • Player: 1:1.
  • Banker: 1:1, minus a 5% commission on winnings. Evolution’s No Commission page describes removing this 5% Banker commission, which is the usual rule elsewhere.
  • Tie: usually 8:1. If the round ties, Player and Banker bets are normally returned (a push).

As an example: a ₹1,000 Banker bet that wins returns ₹1,950 in total on a commission table (your ₹1,000 stake plus ₹950 profit after the ₹50 commission). The same bet on Player returns ₹2,000.

House edge in plain numbers

The figures commonly quoted for standard eight-deck baccarat are roughly 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player and over 14% on Tie at 8:1. These are general game-maths figures, not numbers published by any specific provider, and side bets or rule changes alter them. Evolution’s own pages do not publish RTP for its baccarat variants, so the in-game help screen is the place to confirm the exact return for a table. Our RTP and volatility explainer covers how to read those numbers.

Common side bets

Most live tables add optional side bets such as Player Pair, Banker Pair and Perfect Pair. They pay more because they hit less often, and they almost always carry a higher house edge than the main bets. On Evolution’s No Commission table, the Super 6 side bet pays 15:1 if the Banker wins with a total of 6.

Strategy that actually helps

No betting system changes the house edge. Each round uses the cards left in the shoe, and patterns on the scoreboard (“roads”) describe the past, not the future. Progressive systems such as doubling after a loss only change how quickly you hit your limit or the table maximum.

What does help:

  1. Stick to Banker or Player. These are the lowest-edge bets on the table. Banker is marginally better over time on a commission table.
  2. Treat Tie and side bets as occasional extras. If you enjoy them, cap them at a small share of each session’s budget.
  3. Know the table type before you bet. Commission and no-commission tables pay the Banker bet differently, which changes the maths.
  4. Set a session budget and a time limit. Baccarat rounds are quick, and on a speed table you can play many more rounds per hour.
  5. Decide a stop point in advance. For example, stop when you have lost your set budget or when you have doubled it, whichever comes first.

If you are using bonus funds, check the terms first: many welcome offers count table games at a reduced rate toward wagering or exclude them. Our wagering requirements guide explains how contribution rates work.

Variants you’ll find online

Speed Baccarat (Evolution)

Same rules, faster dealing. Evolution states that a standard baccarat round lasts 48 seconds, while in Live Speed Baccarat cards are dealt face-up and each round is completed in 27 seconds. Speed Baccarat’s own page does not state the commission rule explicitly, so check the payout table in the game before betting.

Faster rounds do not change the odds per hand, but they do raise the number of hands per hour. If you normally play 50 rounds in a session, a speed table can get you there in a little over half the time, so your budget runs down faster too.

No Commission Baccarat (Evolution)

Evolution’s No Commission Baccarat removes the 5% commission on Banker wins, except when the Banker wins with a total of 6, which pays 0.5:1. The Super 6 side bet pays 15:1.

Example: a ₹1,000 Banker bet that wins with a total of 7 returns ₹2,000. The same bet winning with a total of 6 returns ₹1,500. The edge is shifted rather than removed, so this is a convenience feature rather than a free improvement.

Lightning Baccarat (Evolution)

Lightning Baccarat adds random multipliers. Evolution’s 2020 game page describes it this way:

  • A 20% Lightning Fee is added to each player’s total bet.
  • Every round features 1 to 5 random Lightning Cards.
  • Winning hands containing matching Lightning Cards are multiplied from 2x to 8x, up to 8x8x8 (512x) with three matching cards.
  • A winning Tie bet with six matching Lightning Cards can produce a multiplier of 262,144x, capped at €500,000 plus the bet.

These facts come from a 2020 snapshot of Evolution’s page, so the current rules may differ. Check the in-game help before playing. The key point holds either way: you pay the fee on every round, while multipliers land only on some winning hands, so results swing more widely than at a standard table.

If you like multiplier-style live games, Evolution’s Lightning Roulette and Crazy Time use a similar idea.

Other versions

You will also find RNG (computer-dealt) baccarat, Squeeze tables where cards are revealed slowly, and tables with Indian-friendly presentation. Dragon Tiger is a close cousin: one card each, highest wins, even faster rounds.

Playing on mobile

Live baccarat runs well in mobile browsers and in casino apps. A few practical points:

  • Use a stable connection. Wi-Fi or strong 4G/5G avoids a frozen stream at the moment of the reveal.
  • Turn the phone sideways if the table layout feels cramped; most live games switch to a wider view.
  • Check your stake before confirming. Small chip buttons on a phone screen make mis-taps easy, especially with “repeat bet” enabled.
  • Watch battery and data. Live video streams use more data than RNG games.

Before you play

Baccarat is quick, low-effort and has some of the lowest house edges in a casino, but every bet still carries a built-in edge for the house. Choose Banker or Player for regular play, treat side bets and Lightning multipliers as entertainment costs, and confirm the exact payout table in the game’s help screen, since commission rules differ between tables.

Set a budget before you open the table and stop when it is gone. If you find yourself chasing losses, read our responsible gambling page for tools and support.

Baccarat: common questions

Which baccarat bet is the best value?

On a standard commission table, the Banker bet carries the lowest house edge of the three main bets, even after the 5% commission. The Player bet is close behind. The Tie bet pays more but has a much higher house edge, so it is a poor regular choice.

What is the difference between Speed Baccarat and normal baccarat?

The rules are the same; only the pace changes. Evolution states that a standard round lasts 48 seconds, while in Speed Baccarat cards are dealt face-up and a round is completed in 27 seconds. Faster rounds mean you can lose your budget faster, so set a session limit.

How does No Commission Baccarat pay the Banker bet?

According to Evolution, there is no 5% commission on Banker wins, except when the Banker wins with a total of 6, which pays 0.5:1. The table also offers a Super 6 side bet that pays 15:1.

Is Lightning Baccarat worth the extra fee?

Evolution's 2020 game page describes a 20% Lightning Fee added to each total bet, in exchange for random multipliers of 2x to 8x on winning hands with matching Lightning Cards. The fee is charged every round, while multipliers only land sometimes, so treat it as a higher-variance version rather than better value. Current rules may differ, so check the in-game help.

Can I play baccarat on my phone?

Yes. Live baccarat streams work in mobile browsers and casino apps. A stable connection matters more than screen size, because a dropped stream mid-round can be frustrating even though bets are settled on the server.
